National History

Theta Nu Xi is the first multicultural sorority in the Southeast founded by the seven Founding Monarchs to bridge the cultural gap at UNC at Chapel Hill.

In 1996, Founding Monarch Melissa Jo Murchison-Blake, was in search of a sisterhood that crossed cultural boundaries  and openly embraced her as a bi-racial woman and all women with multiple identities. Founding Monarch Murchison-Blake recruited six other women to found Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, in spite of their director of Greek affairs’ discouragement that a multicultural Greek organization would not survive.

On April 11, 1997, UNC officially recognized Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority as the alpha chapter. The sorority incorporated on April 29, 1999. The National organization was founded at the first annual National Convention on August 21st, 1999 with the participation of the Alpha Chapter alongside the Beta and Gamma colonies.
